- The innate sense of a figurative narration imbued with mythological import and expressed in the everyday events of the natural world has always been central in my works. An interactive pattern of figuration which I see as a pre-verbal language underlying conscious awareness, uniting the animal, vegetal, terrestrial, and celestial conflagration that is our actual existence. As a deposit of fossilized sediment will display a two-dimensional record of an ecology long past, my goal in painting is to present just such an impressed chronicle of this figurative communication. In the same vein as the geological record, my subject matter is broken up into disjointed vignettes, each panel framing an individual scene weathered down to its elemental lines, colors, and symbology. I take most of my cues from the mark making and colors of natural processes, whether they be lithic or organic in origin, the resulting imagery is interchangeable. I’m also very much informed by Western mythology, pre-renaissance Christian art, Eastern European icon painting, and both ancient and modern graffiti -- any honest mark which intimates that subliminal relationship below daylight mundanity.
